This series started out as a series of barn light portraits I made for my barn mates in exchange for photographing their horses. The out takes of the horses getting a treat became more interesting to me. Most horses are very food driven so treats and sounds are often used to try to get them to ‘pose’ as they are not like dogs who will sit and stay on command! I love the lips, extreme stretches and curiosity they exhibit.Read More
TORI GAGNE, SERIES MOONLIT DANCE
I loved your images and this is why Moonlit Dance III was used as the icon of the category at the top of the page. Shooting horses is such a difficult project! I congratulate you for the approach. Actually are the best horse images I have seen lately (previously I was fan of Jill Greenberg horses –she was a juror a couple of years ago, https://www.jillgreenberg.com/horse/). Everything is beautifully suggested in your work with a great sense of movement while showing the power of the horses at the same time. Congrats!

Of her series Moonlit Dance, the artist writes: “The horse embodies the idea of wildness, freedom, wisdom, power protection and more. Humans have evolved side by side with the horse and forged a very unique relationship. I was inspired to create this series to show horses in a more abstract way embodying the ideas mentioned above. These images were taken at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California”.Read More
One way I sort through images when returning from a shoot or trip is to initially trash all of the duds and do some initial flagging of images I want to work on in the future using Lightroom. I tend to let some of my images sit for months. I feel I have a lot more objectivity and fresh eyes when I come back to them. I often find something in an image the second time around that had not seen before or I decide to post process it in a new way. Here are a few from the vault!Read More
Creating images of horses, especially wild horses is one of my passions. The wild horses are impressive symbols of the American West, freedom and beauty, and their current existence in the wild is in a state of peril due to competing resources on America's public lands where many of them live. If you desire to experience them up close and personal, you can visit them at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in Lompoc, California, or the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota, where there are many opportunities to learn about and support them. Or visit them in the wild here. Some background on wild horses in North America can be found here.Read More
