This series of portraits celebrates a variety of horses, many of them rescues from the wild. I am forever grateful to be able to honor the essence of these remarkable creatures through my art.

Holoka is Choctaw for sacred and beloved. Choctaw horses arrived with Hernando De Soto in the 1500’s and were integrated into some of the tribal communities of the Southeast. In the 1830’s, these small horses carried the old and infirm on on the tragic ‘Trail of Tears’ beginning with the Choctaw indigenous peoples’ forced march from Mississippi to Oklahoma. The Choctaw horses today are important as a genetic resource for the conservation of the Colonial Spanish horses in North America.

Glacier was a grandson of secretariat who was my personal horse. I called him my rescue after he raced for 9 years. He had a wonderful retirement on a farm here in Minnesota with 12 herd mates he was very attached to. I recently had to put him down , he lived to be 29 ½ years old. I sense he is around me every day.

Photographed at a charming Italian horse farm in Tuscany’s Maremma region, this moment unfolded in a pasture of mares and foals. A little unsure, the foal ran close alongside his mother, peeking out from beneath her as the light caught his small face. His tentative curiosity, her reassuring presence, and that fleeting touch of light drew me to make this photograph.

Photographed using the light in a local barn, this series studies the exquisite form of a vaulting horse. I followed the light across the curve of his neck, the sweep of his back, and the fine strands of his mane, allowing the surrounding shadows to simplify each composition. Each image reveals a different balance of strength and softness, bringing attention to the sculptural beauty of his body and the quiet gestures that make horses so interesting to photograph.

This handsome stallion had wandered off his range and managed to break into a neighboring ranch taking several mares back into the hills with him. The owner of the mares went through quite an ordeal to roundup them back up. Since his capture, this stallion had been held in a government (BLM) corral for three years looking back at freedom and the high snow covered peaks that were once his home. He lives at Return to Freedom Sanctuary in CA.
