In 1971, Congress unanimously passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, declaring wild horses and burros to be living symbols of the American West and an integral part of our history. The only other species to have received this level of federal protection is the American Bald Eagle.
For 16 years I have travelled across the American West photographing these iconic horses in their natural environments, on our public lands and in wild horse sanctuaries. Through my limited edition fine art photography, I seek to increase awareness of their plight and preserve their presence through images and story.
My ongoing Wild Horses of the West series stands as a tribute to this rapidly disappearing population, bringing the lives of these animals and their complex history into focus. These two stallions were extremely curious about me as they were not used to seeing humans and came very close to see what I was. Normally the herd would scatter in a situation like this where they are wary of humans but their curiosity got the best of them.

Antelope Valley Herd Management Area Nevada
I watched the sunrise near the Ruby Valley in Nevada and spent the morning photographing a few wild horse families who came down to lower elevation in the winter so they are easier to find in this very vast landscape.

McCollough Peaks Herd Herd Management Area Wyoming
Two Powerful stallions spar in the sagebrush covered high desert. One of my favorite places to photograph. This herd recently went through a bait and trap round up and I am not sure these two are still on the range and may be at a sanctuary now.

Wild horses live in herds and within the herd, families. A herd of wild horses consists of one or two stallions, a group of mares, and their foals. The leader of the herd is usually an older mare (the “alpha mare”), even though one stallion owns the herd. She maintains her dominant role even though she may be physically weaker than the others. The older mare has had more experiences, more close encounters, and survived more threats than any other horse in the herd. The requirement of the lead horse is not strength or size; if this were so, then humans could never dominate a horse. Dominance is established not only through aggression but also through attitudes that let the other horses know she expects to be obeyed.
