Shade was a beautiful dressage horse with an extraordinary mane. I was drawn to the way the barn light fell across his braids, revealing their texture and the graceful line of his neck. This portrait grew from that quiet interplay of light, detail, and elegance.

Isadora-Cruce is a rare brown-and-white spotted medicine hat overo mare. She was born at Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary in July 2002. Both Isadora’s Dam and Sire were from the original horses discovered and gathered from the Wilbur-Cruce Ranch in Southern Arizona when it was sold in 1990. Isadora’s Dam, was an extremely intelligent and cautious lead mare. Her father, Francisco-Cruce, was a very calm and affectionate stallion, also a medicine hat overo. These strong and reliable horses are direct descendants of Padre Kino’s original herd who arrived in America from Spain in the late 1600s.

A striking lovely vaulting horse I was lucky enough to shoot at a farm outside of Minneapolis. Enceno is a horse with a strong and beautiful conformation. Photographed using the light in a local barn, this series studies the exquisite form of a vaulting horse. I followed the light across the curve of his neck, the sweep of his back, and the fine strands of his mane, allowing the surrounding shadows to simplify each composition. Each image reveals a different balance of strength and softness, bringing attention to the sculptural beauty of his body and the quiet gestures that make horses so interesting to photograph.

The History of the Choctaw Pony started out in 1830 with the forced removal of the Indian Nations. These horses walked side by side with the Choctaw People, and became a part of the culture and heritage of the Choctaw Nation. These horses were originally brought to the United States by the Spanish and very few are left that have the pure Choctaw bloodlines, they exist in conservation herds, breeding programs and in sanctuaries in the United States today. This image was taken at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary where one of the conservation herds exists.
