Ethereal Moods of Land and Sea
I often drive across the country to photograph wild horses, visit family, or simply enjoy the outdoors. These journeys give me ample opportunity to take in incredible landscapes and to create expressive images that reveal the essence and emotion of being immersed in these wildernesses. Scientists are beginning to find evidence of nature’s profound impact on our brains and our behavior. It is believed that being in nature helps us to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, and increases our attention capacity, creativity, and ability to connect with others.

These otherworldly yellow and brown striped hills in Death Valley National Park have been shaped by the powerful force of water, and even during dry times, the path carved by this water is unmistakable.

I love the wide open North Dakota landscape that I believe we are implicitly drawn to. North Dakota’s Little Missouri National Grasslands is the largest grassland in the United States at more than 1 million acres and one of three grasslands in North Dakota. North Dakota is home to more wild life refuges than any other state. I have seen some of the most amazing bird migrations on my way across this state to photograph wild horses in the west.

Lake Superior is not only the largest of the Great Lakes; it is the largest body of fresh water on Earth. Lake Superior is known as Gitchi-gami to the native Ojibwe people, meaning "Great Lake". It is also the coldest of the five Great Lakes and rarely freezes over. Lake Superior has different moods, depending on which way the wind is blowing. One day it can be calm and the next day, have huge waves crashing on the shore from gale force winds. It is one of my favorite places to visit and always provides incredible visual beauty and delight to the senses from the fresh pine smells of the north and the rugged rocky shoreline.

Shackleford Banks, the southern-most barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore, is home to more than 100 wild horses. I traveled there in 2016 after hurricane Matthew to photograph the wild horses there. It was an unsuccessful trip as the horses were hiding due to the storms. I turned my camera to the sea and landscape.

Dramatic sunlight sweeps across the dunes of Death Valley, illuminating a crest in rich gold while the surrounding sand falls into soft shadow. Fine ripples reveal the texture of the wind-shaped surface, and broad curves give the landscape an almost abstract simplicity the type of landscape i love to photograph.

Choosing art is a very personal endeavor, by purchasing a gift card you generously give the gift of art. Your recipient will have the option to make a personal choice from their heart and choose something that brings joy and wildness to their personal space. Your gift card also gives back to organizations fighting for wild horses to keep their freedom on our public lands.
